What we do
Equine Myofunctional Therapists understand Conformation, Rehabilitation, Nutrition, Saddle Fitting and Hoof Balance Issues.
These are the essential requirements, which, will contribute to achieving excellent outcomes from the treatments. Owners are encouraged to ensure the therapist they engage is appropriately qualified, accredited and insured to operate safely in Australia.
Treatments are tailored to the individual requirements of each horse and they include sports massage, myofascial release, neuromuscular and trigger point release & lymphatic drainage.
Visually we assess how your horse looks different from a healthy posture. Changes occur when the muscle has adapted around the skeleton and is often adopted as result of compensation.
Visual signs of compensation may include muscle wastage (atrophy) or the opposite, being enlargement (hypertrophy) through overuse of a particular muscle group.
We visually observe the natural gait of the horse (if possible), at a walk, which will tell us if your horse walks correctly or if there is a problem. The movements should be fluid through their range of movement and the muscle contractions and release should also have a smooth extension and recoil. Signs of stiffness and a reduction in the range of movement, poor articulation of the joints, perhaps rigidity and vibration in the tail may also be observed along with muscles that appear to vibrate or flicker with each stride.
EMT can be employed as a remedial or maintenance therapy, improving athletic strength and performance. As with human massage, it also offers benefits in the relaxation of the horses psyche via the nervous system and this replenishment will improve trainability. The fundamentals of this discipline are quite complex in many ways yet so natural and beneficial to the horse receiving the treatment.
Any horse can benefit from massage as a preventative, remedial or relaxing treatment!
